5 Recommended Furisode and Montsuki Coordinations!Introducing Kimono Rentals and Styling Tips

5 Recommended Furisode and Montsuki Coordinations!Introducing Kimono Rentals and Styling Tips

Why do we wear furisode and montsuki hakama for the Coming-of-Age Ceremony?

At the Coming-of-Age Ceremony, it is customary for men to wear montsuki hakama and for women to wear furisode.
The reason is that these garments are considered formal first-rank attire (“dai-ichi reisō”) for those entering adulthood.

What is first-rank attire?

First-rank attire is the highest level of formal wear. To explain in terms of Western clothing: a man’s montsuki hakama corresponds to a tailcoat, while a woman’s furisode corresponds to a gown.
Occasions that call for first-rank attire include ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, and investiture ceremonies. Wearing such attire is recommended for these important moments.
The Coming-of-Age Ceremony marks a major milestone in life, one of the most formal events in Japanese culture. Therefore, the custom is to wear montsuki hakama and furisode. These kimono are imbued with people’s wishes for good fortune, protection from misfortune, and blessings at life’s turning points.
Since this is a once-in-a-lifetime stage where you are the star, why not attend your Coming-of-Age Ceremony dressed in the montsuki hakama and furisode—the traditional first-rank attire of Japan?

Recommended Furisode Coordinations

Furisode Coordination 1: Classical Style

The “classical” style makes generous use of traditional patterns that have existed since ancient times. For example, plant motifs such as pine, bamboo, and plum; animals such as cranes and butterflies; and other designs like fans, shells, or landscapes.

Furisode Coordination 2: Cute Style (DECOCO)

Furisode with soft colors, small floral patterns, or modern motifs. With Rental Kimono Okamoto’s original DECOCO styling, you can add lace, pearls, and other accessories to make the outfit even cuter.

Furisode Coordination 3: Chic & Cool (Individualistic)

A mature, chic outfit that allows you to express your individuality. A key feature is that the atmosphere can change dramatically depending on how you combine the obi and kimono.

Recommended Montsuki Coordinations

Men’s Coordination 1: Montsuki Hakama

A formal men’s kimono with a haori (jacket) that bears family crests. Available in a variety of colors, allowing for different moods and impressions depending on the combination.

Men’s Coordination 2: Jinbaori

A heavy and stately garment rich in weaving and embroidery. Originally worn when going to battle, it is an attire meant to raise one’s spirit.

When do people usually decide on their Coming-of-Age kimono?

Most people make their decision around one year to six months before the ceremony.
The general schedule leading up to the ceremony is as follows:
1.Gather information about furisode
2.Preview and try-on
3.Reservation / Contract
4.Pre-ceremony photo shoot
5.The day of the ceremony
The Coming-of-Age Ceremony only happens once in a lifetime.
We at Rental Kimono Okamoto sincerely support you so that your 20th birthday memories will be wonderful ones.
Choosing a furisode often comes with worries and questions. Even if you are still undecided between renting and purchasing, please feel free to visit us for a consultation.
