The temple enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha as its principal image, with Ashikaga Takauji as the founder and Muso Soseki as the founding priest. Closely tied to the Ashikaga shogunate and Emperor Go-Daigo, it holds the highest rank among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto.

The ceiling (10.6 m × 12.6 m) is covered with 159 cedar boards, each 3 cm thick, lacquered and coated with white clay, upon which a powerful ink-painted dragon—“The Cloud Dragon”—stares in all directions from within a 9-meter double circle. Its dynamic presence is breathtaking! Originally painted by master artist Suzuki Shonen in the Meiji period, the original suffered heavy damage, and parts are preserved today. These are displayed to the public each February at the Great Hall.
