Best Nighttime Spots to Stroll in Kimono
Let us introduce four carefully selected spots in Kyoto that are perfect for evening strolls in kimono!
These are places where you can enjoy a completely different atmosphere from the daytime — rich with Kyoto’s unique charm.
Put on your favorite kimono and experience the magical ambiance of Kyoto at night!
Kamo River

The Kamo River takes on a calm, romantic atmosphere at night, completely different from its lively daytime charm.
Bridges and surrounding buildings are beautifully lit, and their reflections on the water create a dreamy setting.
Around Shijo Bridge, you’ll often find couples and friends sitting along the riverbank in a perfectly spaced line — a signature Kyoto scene.
Take a relaxed walk along the riverside promenade and enjoy the soothing night breeze.
In summer, traditional riverside dining terraces called yuka appear, allowing guests to enjoy a meal while listening to the gentle murmur of the river.
Indulging in the flavors of a long-established Kyoto restaurant while gazing at the Kamo River is a true luxury.
Be healed by the shimmering reflections on the water and soak in the essence of a Kyoto summer evening.
Kimono Forest

A popular art installation in Arashiyama, the Kimono Forest is located inside Randen Arashiyama Station.
Here, around 600 illuminated pillars filled with vibrant Kyo-yuzen kimono fabrics line the paths like a glowing forest.
When night falls, the LED-lit poles emit a soft glow, creating a dreamlike space.
Each pole showcases a different pattern and color, offering new visual delights at every turn.
The whole area is wrapped in a kimono-like atmosphere — perfect for Instagram-worthy photos!
In one corner of the forest is the “Dragon’s Atago Pond,” known as a power spot. It’s said that if you make a wish while placing your hand over the pond, happiness will come your way.
Put on your favorite kimono and step into what feels like a fantasy world — all within a train station!
Enjoy the magical harmony of traditional kimono patterns and modern light art.
Yasaka Pagoda

Yasaka Pagoda, located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, is a symbolic five-story pagoda that rises 46 meters into the sky. It was rebuilt in 1440 by Shogun Yoshinori Ashikaga.
While the area bustles with tourists during the day, the nighttime view is quiet and serene.
The silhouette of the pagoda stands against the night sky, and the softly lit stone-paved streets offer a deeply atmospheric stroll.
Surrounded by traditional townhouses and elegant restaurants, the area offers countless Kyoto-style photo opportunities.
From different angles, the pagoda shows many faces — take your time walking through the peaceful streets and find your favorite viewpoint in kimono.
Pontocho & Kiyamachi

Looking to enjoy a more sophisticated Kyoto evening?
Then take a stroll through Pontocho and Kiyamachi, two iconic nightlife areas of Kyoto.
Pontocho’s narrow stone-paved alleyways are lined with traditional restaurants and stylish bars, while Kiyamachi runs along the Takase River, offering a relaxed riverside atmosphere.
At night, Pontocho’s old townhouses are dimly lit, evoking a nostalgic and elegant mood.
Many establishments stay open late, making it a great place for a romantic or stylish dinner.
The blend of tradition and modern flair in Pontocho and Kiyamachi makes them ideal for experiencing Kyoto’s night culture.
Whether you take a slow stroll or spend time savoring the streetscape, you’re sure to create unforgettable memories in kimono.
